song title / lyrics

"when god pays the bills"

who pays the lighting bill,
for our inefficient sun?
behind those pearly gates,
what makes the water run?

and christ's prosthetic hands-
who will foot the bill?
for the nasty thorn and nail wounds
he got up on that hill?

who springs for long-term care insurance
for those wise men three
who all need hip replacement,
from the trip through galilee

who builds the huge call centers
to log our prayer complaints,
and the underfunded pensions
for the cult of saints

it's god who pays the bills
who keeps the heavens humming
the angel's trumpets blowing,
and those harps all gently strumming

but the angels are all quiet
when god pulls up his chair
to his accountant's desk
while ruth ties back his hair

michael swings his flaming sword
the bills are opened wide
job sorts through the useless inserts
casting them aside

john dusts off the check book from
god's upper left hand drawer
and simon drags the mighty pen,
across the kitchen floor

and hauls it up god's long white robe
and drops it, on command
so god can signs the checks and stubs
that shrink beneath his hand

when gabriel has licked the stamps
and samson seals the bills inside
the holy ghosts of envelopes
that deliver them, in stride

god puts his hands over his eyes
to rub the weariness away,
and saw that it was good,
at least, till next sunday.
