every drug you have ever taken, at one point, was force fed to a rat until it died a horrible death, so that the researchers could say: it takes XX mg of the drug to kill 50% of the rats we gave it to. that helps them figure out how much of it to give to you. it's called the "LD50", the Lethal Dose for 50% of animals tested.
